Employability: how to measure the real value of a training programme

· 5 min read

Before choosing an institution, validating a partnership or investing in a training project, one question comes up systematically: does this programme have real value on the job market? The answer does not lie in a brochure or a sales pitch, but in a set of verifiable criteria. For a head of school, a franchise project owner or an investor, knowing how to measure this value is a prerequisite for any binding decision.

Why employability is the right indicator

Employability refers to a graduate's ability to find a job matching the level and field of their training. It is a more reliable indicator than an institution's reputation or the appeal of its communication, because it is built from facts: the status of the diploma, the recognition of the certifying body, the structure of the programme and the actual tracking of graduate outcomes.

For a project owner considering opening an institution, or for a director assessing a partnership, this indicator makes it possible to answer a simple question: does the programme offered have a recognised value beyond the institution that delivers it?

The indicators to actually examine

The type of certification awarded

Not all programmes are legally equal. It is essential to distinguish between:

  • a national diploma, awarded under the authority of the ministry responsible for higher education (this is the case of the BTS (French national higher-education diploma), for example);
  • a qualification registered in the Répertoire national des certifications professionnelles (RNCP), maintained by France compétences;
  • a certification specific to an institution, which binds only that institution;
  • a simple certificate of attendance, which does not constitute a certification.

This distinction directly determines the value of the diploma on the job market and its portability from one employer to another. A programme that cannot clearly state its status should raise a red flag.

The level and structure of the competency framework

An RNCP-registered qualification is positioned on a scale of levels ranging from 3 to 8. This level is not a qualitative assessment: it corresponds to a precise competency framework, validated by the competent bodies. Before assessing a programme, you should check that its stated RNCP level does correspond to an active registration and that the competency framework is consistent with the stated career prospects.

Professional integration and tracking of graduate outcomes

A serious institution must be able to explain how it tracks its graduates after they leave: type of job held, time to employment, match with the training followed. The tracking method matters as much as the result itself: an integration figure without a verifiable methodology has no probative value.

The quality of academic steering

In France, the Qualiopi certification attests that the provider of training activities complies with a national quality framework covering public information, the adaptation of services, the mobilisation of resources and continuous improvement. It does not certify the teaching content itself, but the reliability of the process surrounding it. It is a useful benchmark, provided it is not confused with the recognition of a diploma.

What an employability figure reveals — or conceals

A professional integration rate displayed without method or source does not constitute proof. To be usable, an employability indicator must specify:

  • the population concerned (number of graduates surveyed, period);
  • the measurement period after obtaining the diploma;
  • the definition used for a "matching job";
  • the source of the data (internal survey, certifying body survey, third-party organisation).

Without these details, a figure does not allow two programmes to be compared. This is why it is more prudent to reason first on the structure of the certification (national diploma, RNCP-registered qualification of a given level, institution-specific certification) before relying on integration statistics, which remain complementary data and not a substitute for the actual status of the diploma.

How an institution can structure its measurement

For a head of institution or a franchise project owner, structuring the measurement of employability involves several steps:

  1. Clarify the status of each programme offered (national diploma, RNCP-registered qualification, institution-specific certification) and document it unambiguously in all public communication.
  2. Set up tracking of graduates with a methodology that is stable over time, allowing comparisons from one cohort to the next.
  3. Rely on recognised frameworks rather than on unverifiable internal indicators.
  4. Maintain the quality approach that underpins the Qualiopi certification, not as an administrative formality but as a genuine steering tool.

This rigour becomes a differentiating argument for an institution, an asset for a franchisee seeking to convince their local market, and an evaluation criterion for an investor wishing to assess the soundness of a training network.

The role of the choice of network or partner

An isolated institution must build each of these elements on its own: structuring of frameworks, tracking of graduates, quality approach. An institution backed by a structured education group, such as BSG Group, which develops and directly runs its own schools and supports partner institutions, benefits from an already proven methodology and consistent standards across the whole network. This does not replace vigilance on each programme taken individually, but it reduces the risk of building these tools from scratch.

Frequently asked questions

Is an RNCP-registered qualification equivalent to a state diploma?

No. An RNCP-registered qualification is a professional certification recognised by the State through France compétences, but it must not be presented as a state diploma or a national diploma. These are distinct legal statuses, never to be confused in public communication.

Does the Qualiopi certification guarantee the quality of a programme?

It attests that the provider complies with a quality framework covering its processes (information, adaptation, resources, continuous improvement), not the teaching content as such. It is a guarantee of operational reliability, to be examined in addition to the status of the diploma.

How can I check the RNCP level of a programme?

The level and registration of a qualification in the RNCP are the responsibility of France compétences. Any serious institution must be able to communicate the exact title of the certification, its level and its currently valid registration status.

Measuring the real value of a programme is a demanding exercise, but it is the condition for an informed choice, whether you are a project owner, a head of institution or a potential partner. To discover how this rigour translates concretely in a network of schools, discover our schools.
